Pia
for piri and piano (2007)
The title "Pia" combines the words "piri" (Korean bamboo oboe) and "piano". In Korean, "pi" and "a" means "You and I".
Piri is a small instrument, limited in both range and agility. Yet, with the piri, each note is flexible; it can produce many types of vibrato, also glissandi, and micro tones. In comparison, the piano possesses great range and agility, but a note, once played, is fixed.
These two instruments are different as You (PI) and I (A). I was attracted to these differences and wrote each part keeping in mind the nature of that instrument.
Pia was written for Chi-wanPark.
